Small Black Box Under Dashboard

Just been striping out some more of the Mk5 Ghia Si that I have and noticed a small black box with 8 wires coming from it. It is located under the left hand side of the dash board, just under the left hand side air vent.

 

The 8 wires going to this unit are coloured: Brown, Brown/White, Brown/Green, Black/Yellow, Brown/Red another Brown/White, another Brown/Green and a Grey/Yellow wire.

 

Some wires seem to head up to the instrument panel too.

The box is about 3 inches square, does anyone have any idea what this is?
